Valentine Ornaments
How to Make St. Valentines Day Ornament
Here is a great Valentine craft idea -- making and displaying Valentine ornaments! When most people think of Valentine Day crafts, they probably do not think of making ornaments. But ornaments are not just for Christmas. They make terrific decorations to display any time of the year, and that includes St. Valentine's Day. Don't the glass ornaments in the photo to the left look sleek and stylish hanging on the ornament tree? They are easy to make too. Two of them also are very quick to make. The other two (which actually are alike except for the colors) take longer because they are painted on the inside, which requires at least 24 hours for the paint to dry. Two
non-glass Valentine ornaments
are featured at the bottom of the page. Here is how to make all these lovely handmade ornaments.
Valentine version of Easy Make Ornament Balls
For this ornament, follow the instructions for
Easy Make Ornament Balls.
(The instructions are the same except I did not tie a bow on the Valentine ornament.)
Here are the materials I used for the ornament shown in the photo:- 55 mm clear glass ball ornament (approximately 2-1/8 inches from top to bottom, not including the cap)
- Red metallic shred
- Ribbon
- Glue stick
- Instead of a glue stick, you can use double-sided tape. It should be the same width or slightly narrower than the ribbon you use.
Heart-Shaped Ornament with Red Shred
Talk about easy! All you need to do to make this ornament is fill a heart-shaped glass ornament with red metallic shred.I used a 60mm heart ornament (approximately 2.36 inches in height). Where do you buy these heart-shaped ornaments?
- Check with craft supplies stores near you. I bought my heart-shaped ornaments at my local Michael's craft store. Unfortunately, Michael's does not sell clear glass ornaments all year around, as they are considered Christmas crafts.
- If you know of an online source for these heart ornaments, please let me know. I'd appreciate it a lot!
Painted Heart-Shaped Ornaments
To make these ornaments, just use acrylic craft paint to coat the inside of clear heart-shaped glass ornaments and let the paint dry.
For painting instructions, see
how to paint inside of glass ornament balls.
If you want to make glass ornaments such as these Valentines all year around, I recommend that you stock up on the glass supplies in the Fall. For more information, see this
Craft Tip.
Valentine Ornament Made from Window Screening
The Valentine ornament shown to the right is an experimental project. It did not turn out exactly like I had in mind, but I think it has potential.I cut a heart-shaped piece of fiberglass window screen, painted it red, and glued red glass beads around the edge. (I used rochaille beads which have a silver lining. Regular seed beads would be fine also.) I hung it on the ornament tree with red wire I curled a few times. Window screening comes in aluminum and fiberglass and is sold by the foot at hardware and home supplies stores. Regular scissors worked fine for cutting the screen I used. Some screening is thicker, and heavier shears may be needed for cutting.
Paper Mache Valentine Ornaments
To the left is another non-glass Valentine ornament to make.Buy a heart-shaped paper mache ornament at your local craft supply store. Paint it black and white with acrylic craft paint, let it dry, then glue on red heart-shaped jewels. (They come in little bags in various sizes.) If you don't like black for valentines, use pink, red, or any color you choose. Paint a simple or fancy design. Decorate with ribbons or lace. The possibilities are endless!
