Tree Wall Mural

My Adventures Painting a Tree Room

My tree wall mural, currently in progress, is the first mural I have ever done. As a novice, I will not be providing expert advice on how to paint a wall mural, but I want to document my mural painting adventures here anyway to share with you what I learn and also (I hope) to inspire you to try something new.

I am taking photos of this art project as I proceed and I have included some of them here for your viewing pleasure. I still have a long way to go to complete this project. I'm still working on the first tree. I can't wait to see what it's going to look like when I am all finished!

Here are photos of my hand painted wall mural so far.

First I painted the entire room (walls, ceiling, doors, trim, and blinds) pale blue.

The way I have been doing the tree is to draw it on the wall with white chalk, then paint it using waterbased acrylic craft paints. So far, everything has been done freehand. I haven't used any stencils or stamps.

The photo above is a view of my bedroom standing at the foot of the bed and viewing the far corner. I don't like the leaves I have painted at all and I will be changing them. I am pleased with the way the tree is looking though.

The two photos above show the tree branches I am painting on the ceiling to "hang" over my bed! The second photo was taken looking up at the ceiling.

The photo to the left is a close up shot of the "bark."

In time, my tree wall mural will be finished. In the meantime, I am having wonderful fun working on it and even though it is not completed yet, I do get a bit of the feeling in the dark that I am sleeping under a tree. I can't wait until I paint more trees and foliage and really feel like I am sleeping up in the treetops!
Why did I decide to paint a tree wall mural?

When I was growing up, I lived in a house with a big yard and lots of big trees. My father built a tree fort that was really great. It consisted of a wooden platform supported by four trees. There was no roof. It had a wooden railing about three feet up from the floor and chicken wire between the railing and the floor. Access to the tree fort was achieved by means of a chain link ladder and a trap door. I loved to invite friends over to spend the night in the tree fort and I continued to do this even when I was "grown up" in high school and later when I came home from college for summer vacations.

My current project is to recreate that tree fort effect by painting my bedroom so it appears to be completely outdoors and up in the trees. I want the floor to look like it's a platform supported by four or five big trees. The only differences between my tree room and the wonderful old tree fort my dad built will be that my room won't have the railing or chicken wire and the trees will be sycamores instead of pines.

There you have it for now, folks. I will update this report from time to time, so please check back.
