Red Giant Squid Ornament

Red Giant Squid Ornament

My daughter and I are in a mother-daughter book club that meets once a month. The hosts are supposed to plan a craft project for the group to work on while they are discussing the book, something that ties into the story. For a meeting that my daughter and I hosted, the club had read a book with a giant squid as a main character.

We came up with a plan for making giant squid ornaments, inspired by the Styrofoam spider ornament on your website. For the body, we used a Styrofoam cone that I spray-painted red. We used red pompoms and large wiggly eyes for the eyes, and two red "boas" cut into four pieces each for the legs. We attached these using Elmer's glue. We were going to attach two red pipe cleaners for the feeding tentacles but decided not to because the ornament already was big enough and the pipe cleaners just got in the way. We attached a hook at the top.

All the materials were purchased at Michaels.

Thank you so much for the idea that inspired us. Your website was helpful. You include great detail which I found helpful, useful, and interesting. The girls in the book club and their mothers loved the squids. It was a big hit and a lot of fun.

I am enclosing a photo of the giant squid that my daughter made.

Thank you so much for sharing your terrific squid, Julie. I love it! I'm so pleased that my Styrofoam spider ornament inspired you and your daughter. You took the seed of an idea -- and really ran with it, adding a great deal of variation and creativity all your own. Great job!

Really cute squid

My seven-year-old son is fascinated with sea creatures, and I am sure that he would really enjoy making this squid and displaying it in his room. Thanks so much for sharing this idea.

Thanks

Hi. I am a divorced man with a 9 year old daughter who is artistic and creative. She loves to make things. She lives with her mother but when she is with me, I try to do things with her that she likes to do and which enrich her life. After seeing this page, it occurred to me that she would really enjoy making crafts and that if I had the supplies and instructions on hand, making something would be something special that she and I could do together. It would be fun for me too. Thanks so much for planting this idea into my head. We might not necessarily make the squid, but we will be creative and make things together. I can't wait.
