Spider Crafts Halloween Ornaments
How to Make Styrofoam Spider Ornament
Homemade Halloween crafts are always fun.
For a really easy Halloween crafts project, make your own ornaments like this spider using a Styrofoam ball and pipe cleaners.
Here are the materials you will need for this Halloween spider and instructions on how to make it.
Materials
Styrofoam® ball
The Styrofoam ball I used came in a package of six, as shown in this photo.
The ball I used is 2-1/2 inches (63mm) in diameter. I already had it in my craft supplies. Otherwise I probably would have purchased a slightly smaller ball for this project, such as the 1-1/2 inch or 2 inch size. (These balls are available in many sizes.)
4 black chenille stems (12-inch "pipe cleaners")
Black craft paint
Paint brush
2 wiggly eyes (I prefer self-adhesive ones.)
2 black pom poms
Black wire (at least 2 inches)
Glue
Ribbon (at least 7 inches)
Instructions
Paint the Styrofoam ball black and let it dry.
I stuck the end of a thin wooden skewer into the ball before I began painting.
After painting the ball, I set the skewer into a tall glass to allow the paint to dry.
When the paint is dry, shape the wire into a "U" and press the ends into the Styrofoam ball so that only a small loop remains. This wire loop will be used to hang the finished ornament.
Optional: Apply a thin coating of glue to each end of the wire before pressing it into the ball. The shorter the wire you use, the more important this step is.
Fold the four pipe cleaners in half to locate the center. Then cut each one at the crease, creating eight pieces. Each piece will be six inches long.

Stick the pipe cleaner pieces into the Styrofoam ball to form eight legs.
Approximately 3/4 inch of the pipe cleaner should be pressed into the Styrofoam ball.
As an optional step, you may want to apply a very thin coating of glue to the end of each piece before pressing it into the ball.
Glue the pom poms where you want the eyes to be.
Attach the wiggly eyes onto the pom poms. Use glue if the wiggly eyes are not self-adhesive.
Shape the eight chenille stem pieces to look like spider legs, as shown in the photo above. Or for another leg style, see the picture of the glass ball Halloween spider down the page.
Loop a piece of ribbon through the wire loop and make a sturdy knot.
That's all there is to making this easy Halloween spider crafts ornament.

Here is another Halloween spider ornament. This one is made with a glass ornament ball that you can either paint black on the inside or stuff with black pom poms.
Make Christmas spider ornaments using clear glass ball ornaments filled with metallic shred. Add glitter stem legs and festive bows.

The versatile garden spider ornament is made with a glass ornament ball, paper shred, and fuzzy chenille stems.
Many variations are possible with all of these ornaments.
For a convenient way to store your spider ornament, try recycling a plastic container from the salad bar to use as an ornament storage box.
