Glass Snowman Ornament
How to Make Glass Ball Snowman Ornament
Making this glass snowman ornament is a fun and easy project. I have made many of these adorable fellows. I have kept some but have given most away as gifts. Everyone loves them!Making handmade ornaments always is a great Christmas arts and crafts idea. This ornament is especially versatile because snowman crafts are appropriate for any winter occasion or celebration, not just Christmas.
This particular glass snowman ornament and the variations of it I have made over the years were inspired by several I saw displayed in my local Michael's craft store.
Materials
Clear (or frosted) round glass ball ornament- For the snowman ornaments shown in the photos on this page, I used the 67mm size glass ball, which is approximately 2-5/8 inches from top to bottom, not counting the cap.
White shred (crinkled shredded paper) Wiggle Eyes (I prefer self-adhesive ones. Size depends on size of ornament ball and your preference.) Two pompons (whatever color you want) (I use the 1" or 1-1/2" size, depending upon the size glass ball.) Chenille stem ("pipe cleaner") (whatever color you want) Orange craft paint (for "carrot" nose) Black opaque paint marker (extra-fine) or black craft paint (I prefer using the
opaque paint marker.)
Ribbon Glue gun
Instructions
Remove the top from the ornament.Stuff the shredded paper through the hole until the ornament is full. (Be careful. Sometimes the glass edge has a sharp spot. It is best to use the eraser end of a pencil to push the paper through the hole.) Replace the ornament top. Glue on two wiggle eyes (or use self-adhesive wiggle eyes). Optional: When glue is dry and wiggle eyes are securely adhered, outline the eyes and add eyelashes and eyebrows using the extra-fine black opaque paint marker or black craft paint. Paint a carrot nose using orange craft paint. Add a mouth using extra-fine black opaque paint marker or black craft paint. Cut a piece of the pipe cleaner for the ear muff band. It will go across the top of the head from one ear muff pompon to the other. Glue the ends of the pipe cleaner piece in place using hot melt glue gun. (Although other types of glue (such as Elmer’s) are satisfactory for applying the eyes and pompons, it has been my experience that hot melt glue works best for keeping the chenille band securely adhered to the glass.) Attach a pompon to each side of the head for the ear muffs, covering up the ends of the chenille piece. (Use glue or self-adhesive pompons.) Tie a ribbon through the hanger top to hang it on the tree.
Variations
Many variations of this glass snowman ornament are possible, such as:Instead of using wiggle eyes, paint on the eyes using paint pen or craft paint. For example, you can paint on two pieces of “coal” for the eyes, using black paint. Use a frosted ornament instead of a clear one. (See photo 1 below.) Fill the bulb with iridescent shred instead of the matte finish white paper shred. (See photo 2 below.)
Another variation of the glass snowman ornament is to start out with an opaque white bulb that has a snow crystal-like design already on it, like the one below on the left. I got this bulb at Hobby Lobby in a box of six. There is no need to put any shred inside this bulb. Other than that, the instructions are the same as for the others above.
Aren't snowman crafts fun? As you can see, there are many ways you can vary this versatile ornament. Try out some of your own ideas too!
