Candle Making Starter Kit
Handmade Scented Candle
If you are new to candle making, an inexpensive candle making starter kit may be the way to go if you want to make a handmade scented candle but do not have the necessary equipment.
Candlemaking kits are sold in arts and crafts supply stores and online. There are many different types of candle kits, and the prices vary widely.
The kit featured in the photo to the left is reasonably priced and contains the wax, wicks, fragrance, and color -- plus the equipment you will need (thermometer, pouring pot, and molds) which you can use over and over again.
I bought my kit at the local Michaels arts and crafts store and paid $22 (USD) for it. Since then, I have seen the same kit being sold online for as little as $15.95 and as much as $25, plus shipping.
This particular beginner's candle making kit is the Country Lane Candle Making Pouring Pot Kit. It contains molds to make three scented votive candles, and enough wax to make several more. Of course, you can reuse the equipment again and again and substitute other molds whenever you want to.
The one drawback to this Candle Making Pouring Pot Kit is that the packaging does not indicate the color or scent the finished votives will have. You will just have to take your chances. (I believe that the randomness helps keep the price down. It also is my understanding that the dye color is matched to the fragrance and that both are top sellers.) But even if the color and scent are not your favorites, the kit does provide a fairly inexpensive way for the beginner candle maker to acquire valuable experience coupled with some reusable equipment.
Here are the items this candle starter kit includes:

Granulated Paraffin Wax
The wax that comes with this kit is one pound of paraffin wax in granulated form.

Candle Wax Pouring Pot
The wax is melted in this pouring pitcher. (It will need to be placed in a large pan of boiling water, to create a double boiler.)

Candle Thermometer
The kit also includes a thermometer. It will be clipped onto the top of the pouring pitcher with the thermometer inside.

Candle Color Square
The kit includes a color square, a section of which will be broken off and added to the melted wax.

Candle Fragrance Square
The kit also includes a fragrance square. A piece of this will be broken off and added to the melted wax.
 Votive Molds
The kit includes three reusable molds for votive candles. (There should be enough wax remaining for additional votive candles.) The molds in my kit are sturdy plastic. In some kits they are metal.

Votive Wicks
The kit also includes nine votive wick assemblies.
I recommend this candle making starter kit if you do not already have any of the supplies it contains -- and are willing to take "pot luck" regarding the color and fragrance! Generally you will pay less for the kit than if you buy all the materials and equipment separately.
Kits are a smart way for the beginner to get started in any craft, including candle making. If this particular candle making starter kit does not appeal to you, there are many others on the market to choose from.
I have used this candle kit myself and found it very handy and easy to use. It comes with clear, easy to follow instructions.
