Batik Safety Tips
Enjoy doing batik but keep safe by following these batik safety tips.
Batik is not an appropriate activity for young children. - Batik involves mixing and working with dyes and hot wax. These activities are not appropriate for young children.
Batik safety tips: Wax safety.- Batik involves working with hot melted wax, using an electric skillet or a pot on a hotplate to maintain the wax at the correct temperature. It is very important to avoid overheating.
- Overheated wax can catch fire.
- Do not use water to put out a wax fire. Treat a wax fire the same as a grease fire. Use a fire extinguisher or suffocate the fire with baking soda or table salt.
- Inhaling smoke from overheated wax can cause lung damage.

Batik safety tips: Dye safety.- Batik also involves working with dyes. The dyes used for the projects that will be featured on this website (coming soon!) will be non-toxic fiber reactive dyes. These dyes are safe to use with the following precautions:
- Do not inhale the dye powder.
- Mix dyes in a well-ventilated area.
- Wear a dust mask when you measure the dye powder and mix the dye.
- If you spill any dye powder, wipe it up immediately.
- Wear gloves while measuring, mixing, and working with dyes. Submerging your hands in dye without gloves possibly may result in splits in the skin.
- Avoid prolonged exposure to the dye.
- Do not let the dye splash into your eyes.
- Wash your hands thoroughly before eating or smoking after you have been measuring, mixing, or working with dyes.
- Do not use bleach to remove dye stains from your hands. Feel free to use a hand cleaner, pumice, or loofah to remove dye from the skin. Dye stains usually wear off within one to three days.
Batik safety tips: Work area preparation.- It is best not to do batik, or at least not to mix dye, in an area also used for food preparation. If you do work in such an area:
- Remove all uncovered food items before you begin.
- Cover all food preparation surfaces before opening a jar of dye powder. (Use newspapers, towels, or other protection.)
- Wipe down all surfaces afterwards.
Batik safety tips: Preventing airborne dye powder.- Preventing airborne dye powder will reduce both danger and mess. Here are some suggestions:
- Hold the dye jars down in the bottom of a sink when opening them. (Alternative: Use a box lined with damp paper towels.)
- Place your water containers in the sink or box and mix your dye there.
- Replace the lids to the dye powder jars before removing them from the sink or box.
- Do not keep the dye powder jars open any longer than necessary.
- To prevent stirring the air, do not talk or make sudden, fast movements while you are measuring out the dye powder. Also, although you may want to use a fan for ventilation, turn it off while you are measuring out the dye.
- Wipe up loose dye powder immediately.
Batiking is such a satisfying art. Keep it enjoyable by keeping safe!
